Understanding your personal page at Family Tree DNA

RETURN

First, you must log in. You were supplied a kit number and password when your first results were posted. If you have lost these, contact Ashley Coursey of Family Tree DNA. The web page is http://www.familytreedna.com/. I have circled the area where you should input your kit number and then your password.

Family Tree DNA recommends that you upload your pedigree and test results to ySearch (no cost to you) so that your results can be compared outside of our family group. You can join ySearch without uploading a pedigree chart. If you want to upload a pedigree, you will first have to create it as a GEDCOM file. To join ySearch and upload your data, select the Y-DNA MATCHES page (link is on left side of your personal page). Then click the link that I have circled. You will be assigned a ySearch user name and password. Be sure to record it in a safe place.

Family Tree DNA also recommends that you upload a pedigree chart to their site so that all participants who share your DNA (and only matching participants) will be able to view it. You will have to first create it as a GEDCOM file. Next, select the link on the left side of your personal page labeled GEDCOM - FAMILY TREE. You will then have to use the BROWSE button to locate the GEDCOM file on your computer and then use the UPLOAD button to start the transfer.

When you click on the link on the left side of your personal page labeled Y-DNA MATCHES, you will get a page similar to this one. If you click on the symbol that looks like a sideways Y on the right hand side of the page, you will get the probabilities of having a recent common ancestor. Where there is a symbol marked FT, you can call up that persons pedigree chart.

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

The pedigree chart is shown without dates. When you place your mouse curser over the persons name, the dates are temporarily shown. This method adds a lot of protection against identity thieves.
